It is an ancient form of therapy and one of the most natural gestures we perform daily. The goal of massage therapy is to soothe muscle or joint pain, to tone the volume of some tissues, but also to preserve and improve mental well-being, relieving tension and fatigue.
It is performed with a technique that, through body contact, manual and with precise and sequential maneuvers, alleviates pain and tension in the muscular system. The movements of the massage must be performed in the direction of the muscle fibers and must respect the direction of venous circulation, therefore from the extremities towards the heart. They can be decisive and quick, for a toning effect, or slow and delicate, for a relaxing effect. Pregnant women and the elderly are also among those who can benefit from massage therapy treatments.
Among the various types of massage we can distinguish the touch, that is the sliding of the palm or fingertip on the skin, thus activating the venous return to the heart; percussion, characterized by a sequence of blows given with the palm or with a closed fist, thanks to which a stimulating and invigorating effect is induced; kneading, or the lifting of the skin performed with a pinch and a twist; pressure, that is, the compression of the skin with the palm of the hand, making a continuous and gentle movement; this technique is useful for eliminating muscle contractures; vibration, ie a pressure combined with an oscillatory movement that produces a stimulating effect on the patient and detachment, aimed at “ungluing” the various tissues, especially following post-traumatic interventions. In order to facilitate the running of the hands on the body, oils or creams are often used.
